luck be a ladybug

The Ladybug wears no disguises.

She is just what she advertises.

A speckled spectacle of spring,

A fashion statement on the wing….

A miniature orange kite.

A tiny dot-to-dot delight.

-J. Patrick Lewis

Ladybugs are a sign of spring!  I happened upon this cute little bug on a sunny day in a beautiful park with a good friend by my side.  Ladybugs are one of my favorite little insects, yes butterflies are beautiful, but there is something about having this cute little bug crawl across your palm–tickling you the whole way.

Ladybugs are also a sign of luck in most countries. I was familiar with this idea so I checked out what other folklore surrounded ladybugs.  In France, ladybugs will fly away with your ailments. Pending the number of spots on a ladybug’s wings will give you a sign of the coming harvest. Belgians believe that if a ladybug crawls all the way across a young girl’s hand that she will be married within a year.  In Norway, if a man and a woman spot the same ladybug at the same time–it means they will start a romance soon after. Another legends says that the person holding the bug will have as many kids as the lady has spots.

fertility, romance, and bountiful crops… oh my!

Well, no matter the implications of holding a ladybug, they can’t be to bad? I’m going to stick with luck–because you can never have enough of it.

be lucky

and a shout out to the photographer, audrey, for capturing such a beautiful moment!
